You can check in any time at the Leonard Residence Hall, located next to the Sports Center.

Parking at AU

Parking will be available at the Nebraska Parking lot, located in the corner of Massachusetts and Nebraska Avenue.

Parking passes:

If you are staying on-campus overnight, you will be provided with a free parking pass. Before parking at the Nebraska lot, please pick up your parking pass at the Leonard Residence Hall, where you will also be staying at.

If you are not staying on-campus overnight, you will have to pay for parking yourself. A parking pass machine is located on the New Mexico Avenue side of the parking lot (you will have to indicate the parking space # and simply pay – no ticket)

Locations:

1) From Campus: at the street side of the Kogod School of Business
2) From the Tenleytown-AU Metro station: at the corner of 40th and Albemarle Street (At the Metro station, take the escalator and exit to the east, which is on your left (look for the sign directing you to AU Shuttle stop). Once at street level, the shuttle stop is just a few yards ahead at the intersection of 40th Street and Albemarle Street.)

By Car

From northeast of Washington (New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore)
Follow I-95 south to I-495 west toward Silver Spring.

From northwest of Washington (western Pennsylvania, western Maryland)
Follow I-270 south. Where I-270 divides, follow the right-hand branch toward northern Virginia. (Do not take the branch toward Washington.) Merge with I-495 (Capital Beltway).

From south or west of Washington (northern Virginia, Norfolk, Richmond, Charlottesville)
Follow I-95 north or I-66 east to I-495 (Capital Beltway). Take I-495 north toward Silver Spring.

From I-495 (Capital Beltway)
Take exit 39 and follow the signs for River Road (Maryland Route 190) east toward Washington. Continue east on River Road to the fifth traffic light. Turn right onto Goldsboro Road (Maryland Route 614). At the first traffic light, turn left onto Massachusetts Avenue NW (Maryland Route 396).Continue on Massachusetts Avenue NW through the first traffic circle (Westmoreland Circle). Continue one more mile to 4400 Massachusetts. The entrance to the Katzen Arts Center parking garage will be on your left.

By Plane

Washington’s Ronald Reagan National Airport—the airport most convenient to AU—is approximately 30 minutes from campus during rush hour by cab. Washington Metro (subway) trains run daily from National Airport into downtown Washington on the yellow or blue lines. Transfer to the red line at Gallery Place station or Metro Center station in the direction of Shady Grove (Tenleytown/AU station).

Dulles International Airport is about 45 minutes from campus and Thurgood Marshall Baltimore/Washington International Airport is about one hour from campus.
All three airports offer shuttle services to major hotels and meeting points in downtown Washington. Shuttle services cost between $15 and $40 one way, depending on your point of origin.

By Train (Amtrak)

The Amtrak trains arrive at Union Station, located in SE of Washington, DC. The easiest way to get to American University from here is by taxi. Also very accessible is the DC metro.

Connect with Taxi: Taxis can be found at the main-front entrance of the Union Station.
Destination: Main campus, American University at 4400 Massachusetts Avenue, NW – enter into Glover Gate from Massachusetts Ave., and have them drop you off right at the Leonard Residence Hall (unless you’re going straight to the Ward Circle Building – then you can be dropped off at Nebraska Ave.)

Connect with Metro: There is a Union Station metro stop, accessible from the outside of Union Station (if you’re standing in front of the main-front entrance it is on the left side of the building – you’ll see a Metro post that says ‘Union Station’). Take the metro in direction of Shady Grove and get off at Tenleytown-AU station. From here you can walk or take the AU shuttle (directions/maps at top of page).
