The Science, Technology, and Environmental Policy Area (STEP) at the Humphrey School focuses on public issues arising at the intersection of science, technology, environment, and society that shape human well-being, environmental sustainability, and social justice in a complex and diverse world. The area grants a 2-year professional masters of science degree in Science, Technology, and Environmental Policy. STEP students come from diverse backgrounds, but share a common goal of translating science, engineering, and environmental expertise into action-oriented professional careers in energy and environmental policy.

We seek applications for a two-year visiting faculty position in Science, Technology, and Environmental Policy (STEP). The visiting faculty would be responsible for 9 credits of teaching in each of two academic years as well as mentoring graduate students and engaging in the life of the school through participation on an appropriate school committee. The faculty member would have access to paid graduate research assistants and the opportunity to work with PhD students in Public Affairs or other University of Minnesota degree programs. The candidate should also contribute to research and scholarship in energy or environmental policy.

Teaching responsibilities would include one or more core courses in our masters level public affairs curriculum such as introduction to policy analysis, statistics for public affairs, GIS, data visualization, public finance, or policy evaluation. The candidate would teach additional courses in energy/environmental policy based on their expertise. This could include graduate level courses in environmental economics, environmental justice, climate policy, energy policy, food and agricultural policy, water policy, technology policy, or conservation policy. Candidates should demonstrate capacity to engage practitioners and the public in research, education, and outreach activities and be passionate about preparing students for careers in public affairs.

We are open to research specialties in any area of science, technology, or environmental policy including, but not limited to; energy and/or water; environmental governance; climate change mitigation or adaptation; food or agricultural policy; wastes or toxics; environmental risk; or environmental justice. We seek an interdisciplinary and engaged scholar with academic or professional experience in public policy, public affairs, environmental studies, geography, urban and regional planning, environmental economics, energy, natural sciences, engineering, international affairs, or related fields. Candidates whose work intersects with the School’s commitment to equity and inclusion and to public engagement are particularly desired.

The starting date for this appointment is August 24, 2023 or as soon thereafter as possible. Salary will be commensurate with experience.

Qualifications

Candidates without a PhD will be considered only with significant professional experience relevant for training professional students in public affairs.
