Fellowship opportunity is now available with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service (FS) at the Pacific Northwest (PNW) Research Station located in Portland, Oregon. This project will focus on 1) the socioeconomic impacts of wildfires on water security for communities in the West and 2) understanding the set of options available pre- and post-fire to agencies, managers, and landowners as they manage for risk and ecosystem services.
The USDA-ARS National Sedimentation Laboratory in Oxford, MS seeks an Interdisciplinary Scientist (Postdoctoral Research Associate) to study agroecological and economic impacts of a novel edible cover crop system in a food insecure region of the southeast USA. The scientist will participate in a plot study evaluating edible and non-edible cover crop varieties, in addition to ongoing field-scale research projects as part of the Lower Mississippi River Basin (LMRB) Long-term Agroecosystem Research (LTAR) Network. The scientist will assist with collecting and analyzing several types of environmental, agronomic, and economic data to assess agroecosystem dynamics and conduct a tradeoff analysis. Modeling tools may be utilized to extrapolate or evaluate results and may be applied to broader regional studies as part of the LMRB LTAR project. Collaboration in community and producer focus groups is also possible in this project.

USDA OCE’s Office of Energy and Environmental Policy is recruiting for economists at the GS 14/15 level. This is an exciting time to work in our office given all the high-priority policy initiatives USDA has been undertaking on climate and energy policy. We are hoping to hire economists interested in working on topics that include lifecycle greenhouse gas accounting of energy production, analysis of markets for agricultural and forestry energy feedstocks, land-use modeling, new markets for bio-based products, and opportunities for rural renewable energy production.

The Director of the Office of Risk Assessment and Cost Benefit Analysis is an SES level position that serves as a member of the leadership team in USDA’s Office of the Chief Economist (OCE). The Director has responsibility for planning, coordinating, and managing the Department’s risk assessment program; this includes reviewing and approving all risk assessments accompanying proposed major rules of agencies within USDA. The Director also coordinates with other suboffices within OCE on the review of cost-benefit analyses in the Department. Candidates are sought who have comprehensive technical knowledge of risk assessment methods and the development and use of scientific research for use in risk assessment, and of the methods of economic and cost-benefit analysis. Candidates should also have an ability to apply analytical techniques to the resolution of practical problems relating to risk assessment and agriculture.
